Shackle padlock

 

Southern Germany, early 18th century

 

Malleable iron. Trilobate housing with three notches along the sides, reinforced with plates on the front and back. Arched shackle hinged to the housing, stamped with the letter “J” at the top bend – probably the producer’s trademark symbol.

H: 5.9 cm / W: 3.4 cm

Markings: “J” imprint
